School Of The Holy Beast
We don't Do need a degree in
theology to know that Catholicism in Japan isn't a widespread
religion.. Ok, in Japan comes several missionaries, some core of
religious and perhaps they have been the inspiration for the Japanese
nunsploitation. A genre that already appeared in the early seventies
and that has produced several films that combine the Japanese with the
"deformation" of Catholic dogma. Probably it is a screen, as film
historians say, to criticize society and its foundations indirectly.
There are several titles that arrive from the east and among them include "School Of The Holy Beast," also known as "Convent Of The Sacred Beast" 1974's, directed by Norifumi Suzuki produced by the legendary Toei.
Film that marries nunsploitation with another, very Japanese genre the "Pinky Violence".
Film of worship, appreciated and respected by many critics. Maybe, we
sing out from the pack, but in the film by Suzuki for fifty-odd minutes
not nothing happens, then he focus action and mystery in five minutes
around the hour of viewing. Then everything returns to normal.
Unlike the classic nunsploitation the action is
today. The scenes of sex and torture, other stylistic features of the
genre, are pretty quiet and let the imagination more than anything
else, as in the case of a lesbian relationship mimicked by a "voyeur" .
Suzuki, however, when passing from words to deeds or when he describes
the modern times shows a good eye and hand but gives up too often left
with a film rather obvious.
Maya Takigawa is an eighteen years old girl who
decides to became a Sister entering in the convent of "St.Clore" to
investigate the mysterious death of his mother.
The convent is obvious as a large container of sinners, ruled by a
Sister Superior with nazi way of life. She punish the sisters with a
whip or barbed thorns. We have also a a supervisor, a bishop, a
mustachioed hippie that appreciates appreciating particularly the
beauty of the sisters. To put it elegantly.
However Maya in two or three skilled movements can uncover the mystery
of the death of his mother and especially the name of his father who is
none other than Father Kakinuma, the hippie hippie.
In cahoots with her friend Ishida, they break partly ephemeral regime
that prevails at the "St.Clore" and, as well as a nunsploitation is
also a pinky violence get the desired revenge.
The insert of some idiotic situations, see the entry of men dressed as nuns in the convent, lowers the level of the whole.
For some, a cult, for us a dumb nunsploitation.
