Zombeavers
In the end, it is
always toxic waste that creates monsters. Apart from the mention of the
hero of Tromaville, here we are in the camp of pissed off animals. An
ugly film where the ugly is intentional and they try to do everything
wrong. But in a good way.
From memory, by the way, I don't recall even in the heyday of atomic or
experimentally mutated fauna that anyone ever used the dear, nice,
peaceful beavers. And no one can get it out of my head, not even an
interview with the director, that the choice of animal was due not only
to the originality of the subject, but also to the use of the word
'beaver' in the slang.
In any case, Zombeavers 2014 film directed by Jordan Rubin is an
enjoyable horror comedy that does not deny us big bloodshed, splatter
scenes and scary mutations. It's all very straightforward and
frequently plays on the genre's clichés. And it does this well,
at least for a good part of the film, starting with the use of the cute
little beasts who, in addition to turning into zombies, perform the
classic actions that all serial killers would do.
The human characters, on the other hand, are more stereotyped than
ever, deliberately forced starting with the protagonists, that is, six
very white boarding school boys surrounded by the usual peasants who
populate the area.
As I said, everything works for the vast majority of the time. But at a
certain point, in the last part, when the action breaks out or should
do so, Zombeavers seems to become complacent and doesn't offer any more
great cues or funny moments.
The zombie beaver operation nevertheless achieves its objective and it
is a pity that they did not then exploit the cliffhanger that closes
the film.
Fast, precise direction and some not bad special effects for a story
about Mary (Rachel Melvin, seen in Dumb and Dumber To and in the Sleepy
Hollow series) who with her friends Zoe (Cortney Palm) and Jenn (Lexi
Atkins), spends a weekend in a pretty little house near a small lake in
the US countryside. During the night they are joined by their
respective boyfriends and, more importantly, begin to notice strange
things. An aggressive beaver, for example, who appears to be sick with
rabies. But the next day they discover that instead of the modified
beavers they want to kill everyone. And from there on the action breaks
out, with our people trying to save themselves. The beasts, however,
are an enemy not to be underestimated.
