COFFY
“The baddest one-chick hit squad That ever hit town." With a
sentence of ten words we have the summarize of the whole film.
“Coffy” easy assonance with the word Coffee and skin color
of the protagonist, as it said in the head-song "Coffee is the color of
your skin ..." is really tough and very, very, sexy.
Pam Grier is powerful in a anthological "Blaxploitation", very
superlative and crazy and with a wonderful soundtrack. A particular
trend of the genre in which, women (black of course)
get revenge and justice retain their strong sensuality. In our case,
Coffy is a sensual nurse who sees her sister end up badly cause of a
heroin overdose.
Revenge and justice become the only targets of Coffy, that starts
starting to fit within underworld, using all its beauty. Ends up in bed
with a drug dealer then executed with a shot, caught the attention of a
pimp and triggers a brawl with his women at a party. But not all is
easy and over to a policeman friend of his underwear brutally beaten by
the criminals, Coffy is discovered and taken hostage by criminals,
beaten, insulted and condemned to death. But the subtlety and beauty of
our heroine emerge once again.
A very sexy movie and at times comical. With many fight scenes that
always end with clothes torn and her breasts to the wind. Pam Grier
exuberant and plenty of rustic beauty is shown by removing all the
other supporting actors. Apart from these little things thrown in force
in history, "Coffy" is a great and intense film. Fast, never boring,
fun and a really strong morals against drugs.
1973’s movie directed by Jack Hill, one of the most famous
directors of the "Blaxploitation" who very often worked with Pam Grier
(good for him ...). "Coffy" as some sites report follow the
success of another film "Cleopatra Jones” about another woman
seeking revenge against the drug dealers and drug producers. The film
was to be produced by the ”American International Pictures"
which, however, lost the job that ended to "Warner Bros".
“AIP” then jumped in a production of a similar subject, and here we have this movie.
Both movie had the same gross at the box office.
In "Cleopatra Jones" we can see Tamara Dobson an actress who at the
time expected, contended the scepter of the queen of blaxploitation to
Pam Grier.
The soundtrack of "Coffy", is a beautiful and wonderful union of funk
and soul music and it was composed by Roy Ayers famous and appreciated
American composer.
In addition to the cast apart the already acclaimed Pam Grier
there are Robert Doqui seen later in "Robocop" and especially in
Altman’s "Nashville" and "America Today" and Sid Haig famous
today for his role as the "Capitan Spaulding" in "The Devil's Rejects"
and "The House of 1000 Corpses" by Rob Zombie in addition to a part in
"Kill Bill 2" and finally Booker Bradshaw most famous writer of TV
rather than actor.
