VILLAGE OF THE GIANTS
Herbert George Wells, himself, the great science fiction writer,
provides the idea and we can say the alibi to the director Bert Gordon
to make a youngster with music touches. Struck as to the best of cases,
and branded a "little film for teenagers" this movie has had over the
years its just appreciation. And God forbid. Because "Village Of The
Giants" is a lot of fun, carefree, trashy, with a great sexy aftertaste.
Legend, narrated by the director, tell that the idea has come suddenly,
in the midst of negotiations had in Limousine with the 'Embassy Film
"in the person of Joe Levine, who was on his way to the airport. Of
course, just before being discharged Gordon threw out the name of Wells
and the idea for a story from "The Food of the Gods and How It Came to
Earth".
It 'so it is. Rather more or less, as the director more than anything
else is inspired by Wells story created with great freedom. Even the
"opening credits" are something that are worth the "proverbial price of
the ticket"and that identify the youth line of the film. The first is a
scene in negative in which a group of boys dancing wild, then giving
way to the true beginning of the film where the scene is repeated with
the same guys in the water and mud after a car accident. The first song
is the wonderful "Death Race" who was not composed for the film by Jack
Nitzsche, a famous film composer and Oscar winner for "An Officer and a
Gentleman." The same will then be reused as well as in different parts
of the film as also Tarantino's opening of "Death Proof".
Meanwhile in Hainesville a small child called "Genius" has created a
particular food can enlarge living beings. Let's face it now: "Genius"
never been more appropriate name, is Ron Howard here eleven years old,
but already quite recognizable, but still at the beginning of his
career, here he is accompanied by his father who plays the sheriff.
"Goo" is the name of this mixture that immediately attracts the
attention of his sister Nancy and her boyfriend Mike, who are already
looking to make a lot of money. Unfortunatly a couple of ducks take the
drug and then flying in the town in the most jam-packed club of the
place. The place is nothing but the "Whiskey A Go-Go in Los Angeles
where performed a number of world-famous musicians.
So "Goo" becomes known. As revenge the two ducks end up in a barbecue,
in the one of the funniest movie scene of the grill,in which one of
these animals turn on a spit, is eaten by everyone, but nobody has
consequences. So much for the "Mad Cow".
The thing is at the public domain by now, attracts the attention of the
boys of the opening scene, they steal the potion, become giants and
require the country to their will, using the theater as general
headquarte, curtains and drapes like clothes that give an appearance of
Greek gods. Plans simalar as "David and Goliath" traps and so on, but
nothing work against these monsters who want nothing more than to live
free and without rules. The giants dancing in front of the little
people and one lucky among these men was picked up by a giant with a
dramatic neckline and sexy in the most famous scene of the entire film,
the same one immortalized in the poster. But there is calm "Genius" who
has another brilliant idea.
A very linear plot and full implementation of special effects, very
homemade. Between shots from the bottom up to increase the effect of
gigantism, the simple shot with photo background you get to the overlap
of the film that gives animals or humans glued incredible surreal
comedy. Let's leave out the reconstruction of mid bodies obviously
fake, but anything goes, everything is sympathy, and this is a nice "B
Movie".
Shot more or less in two months and ended in 1965, "Village Of The
Giants" shares with "Back To The Future" and "Gremlins" part of the
location. The town square, some streets and theater, are nothing more
than a studio at the time of "Columbia Pictures" then acquired by
Warner Bros ".
The cast addition to the good Ron Howard, to whom it seems unnecessary
to mention the great career is notable for other players. Tommy Kirk
who plays Mike has been a standard bearer of Disney fifties, early
sixties. There is already a bit 'out of the loop of the American
company begins its youth movies then go for horrors. Beau Bridges is
Fred the leader of the "villains" in his career he has achieved success
with TV series like "Stargate" and "The Fugitive", and also went to the
news for being the brother of Jeff. Always among the bad guys are Vicki
London and Gail Gilmore actresses of a certain notoriety at the
time and in several films of the "King" Elvis Presley. Among others we
can see Johnny Crawford and blonde explosive Joy Harmon, who appeared
in American films and TV series.
As we said, "Village Of The Giants" has a few musical numbers performed
by musicians and complex known at the time. Nothing known to the masses
of today, but we can remind the group "The Beau Brummels" authors of
two radio hits of the mid-sixties, Freddy Cannon, Mike Clifford.
"Village Of The Giants" now a "cult" had a mono site where you can read several other curiosities.
