Frankenstein's Castle of Freaks
The news is that there is a great new
entry in our films chart inspired by the classics. All of us have one
and with great surprise in the one about Frankenstein enters this 1974
movie.
The problem is that we (and you, the followers of this blog) we have an
unhealthy chart that we love so much about the worst movies of the
history, that sometimes overlaps the other one, creating a toxic chart
that can be defined as "movies unmissable" Masterpieces and huge craps.
Lovely!
"Frankenstein's Castle of Freaks" is of course (because otherwise we
don’t write about it), a big crap, whose first and only vision
had conquer us.
This isn’t only one of the worst adaptations of the story of Mary
Shelley, but also a film whose paternity has never been claimed. Who is
the director? In the opening credits there is Robert H.Oliver, that
might be the pseudonym of Dick Randall, an American who had married the
first wife of Sinatra, or Ramiro Oliveros, Oscar Brazzi (brother of
Rossano), William Rose and Mario Mancini who had already direct a
similar movie "Frankenstein 80". Who knows! Each source is inclined to
one or the other, and what is certain that whoever was has done a
really bad work.
The production although low-budget, hired a cast of stars: Rossano
Brazzi, Edmund Purdom, Gordon Mitchell, Michael Dunn (who died shortly
after filming) and genre specialist as Xiro Papas, Luciano Pigozzi and
Salvatore Baccaro, credited as Boris Lugosi. In addition, they try to
follow the atmospheres of Hammer Production
The fall of all these things, that could create something good, is
really huge and perhaps as the the director, the actors if they could,
they would have denied that they starred in a movie like this.
When the monster, the backbone of every story of Frankenstein is a
Neanderthal of a tribe that lives undisturbed and invisible near a
village, it’s clear that we are facing with a history that is
really absurd.
Must be said that the first images are not bad, because there is a nice
introduction of the typical horror movie, with the daughter of Count
Frankenstein (promoted from Baron and starring Rossano Brazzi) who goes
to visit her father in his castle in the company of the future husband
and a friend.
The future husband is a figure almost useless, while her friend is the
one who is interested in the experiments of the Count and above all she
falls in love with him, now a widower, seeing a chance to become his
wife and give to him also an heir.
Meanwhile our mad scientist has resuscitated the corpse of the man of
Neanderthal lynched at the opening of the movie by the men of the
village. Not everything goes well, as the story wants, also because the
aides of Frankenstein, a long series of characters incapable, claims
and sinister.
The maniac dwarf Genz expelled from the castle, plans revenge against
the Count and became friend of another primitive man (played by
Salvatore Baccaro). The Butler thinks about his business and his wife
has a sadomasochistic relationship with another servant. Krista, the
daughter of Frankenstein, with her friend Maria shows tits and ass
creating a quite lesbo scene bathing in a sulfur pool.
Obviously the local population is angry with the monster (and he too)
leading us to an ending that would be tragic but it becomes comical.
This cast of stars acts badly and perhaps the only one that has depth to his character is Michael Dunn in the role Genz.
For the rest, the prosperous Christiane Rucker (Krista) and Simonetta
Vitelli (Maria), mitigate this tragic version of the story of Shelley
which for sure, without the aid of lightning, will come back to life
and will be gone in search of the culprits.
