Making a film without making a film. Specialties of exploitation’s directors. And in this list of great sly (and opportunist) artists find a place the Swiss Erwin C.Dietrich.
So you can imagine what kind of film we're talking about: a collage of scenes showing boobs, vaginas and that without hypocrisy go straight to softcore.
The stroke of genius of Dietrich is to give to the content an insolent package without restraint. He kidding us, because "Madchen, die sich (selbst) bedienen" (original title translates into "The girls who (is) help") has as theme a guy who in a porn shop watch, several hard-core flicks.
Seven short sketches almost all comic, absurd, useless and sometimes a bit 'boring. A girl in a bowling beats all the men and then decides to challenge them in another way. A nurse tries to give one last moment of pleasure to a patient operated. A sculptress meets a man in a sauna and takes him home to make the cast of his penis. On a plane a hostess and a passenger spend in the funniest way the flight time. A man watching a porn cartoon realizes that the neighbor is more interesting. A girl finds very pleasant the sound of the violin of a neighbor, and finally a man takes revenge noise of neighbors. Closing with a kind of joie de vivre (so to speak) with vibrators.
The sets often kitsch with bright colors, emphasize even more the fact that we are faced with the classic commercial movie, cleverly set up by good Dietrich.
Direction and performance are minimal but the cast is certainly made by good actresses and actors for the genre that we have seen in other films by Dietrich or by other exploitation’s directors.
There is the powerful Christa Free, (here as a nurse), who in her career has only worked with Dietrich and we remember with pleasure, among many roles, starring in "Der Teufel in Miss Jonas". Even the beautiful Rita Waldenberg, the girl of bowling, was in the same film as Marianne Dupont that here is the sculptress.
The long female battery continues with Claudia Fielers, Esther Studer and Martina Domingo who has also worked with Jesus Franco in "Die Sklavinnen" and "Downtown - Die nackten Puppen der Unterwelt".
Secondary of course is the male presence that has in Eric Falk the most important actor. Falk is the one who watch the porn cartoon, in the longer, more boring, but most artistically interesting segment. "Everady Harton in Buried Treasure" is probably the first hard cartoon of history. Created about in 1928 is a mysterious work, because no one knows for sure who has created it (something are credited important cartoonist ad Max Fleischer, Paul Terry, Walter Lantz, George Canata) and three groups that would work on it to show it at a private party in honor of Winsor McCay.
Recovered from oblivion in the late seventies, the cartoon was shown in several Festivals to end up in 2002 in a collection of porn movies made between 1905 and 1930.
