It’s not the first time, it’s not even the last one,
but this is a remarkable episode in a genre that might be called "El
Santo with tits." The mix lucha libre/cine mexicano has created a
multitude funny of B movies and certainly could not miss stories with
female protagonists.
The great Renè Cardona knows a lot the luchadoras because he
launches this sub-genre in 1962 with "Las Luchadoras contra el doctor
asasino". With his faithful screenwriter Alfredo Salazar the two work
several times in this genre and 1968 create this beautiful "La mujer
murcielago".
The murciélago is the bat, so we have a bat woman, therefore DC Comics had to prick up their ears.
Cardona's film travels on the fine line of copyright, taking
inspiration from the unforgettable TV series "Batman" with Adam West,
with the protagonist that if doesn’t wear a bikini has the
regular overalls.
Her name is Gloria, she is also a very rich heiress who works against
the forces of evil, as well as a strong luchadora. It lacks only for
budget reasons (we think) the whole series of bat-gadgets, bat mobile
included.
What has prevented the complaint by the DC Comics it remains a mystery,
as the story of Cardona/Salazar is the classic canvas, with some sexy
moments seeing the protagonist.
A mad scientist kidnaps wrestlers to suck the liquid from the pineal
gland and create a new breed of hybrid human/fish. The poor and very
rubbery version of the Gill-man is the result of his crazy experiments
hampered by mujer murcielago hired by the police. It’s not all
easy, because our heroine quite die before the final triumph.
Many trash scenes see the star goes around in bikinis and fight the bad
guys, or teach the lucha libre to several colleagues. Bad and thugs are
very stereotyped.
"La mujer murcielago" is really a great B movie, colorful, cheerful,
with several pop songs (always in style "Batman") and a good direction.
Cardona of course is a great expert and exploits with a good
photography the beauty of Acapulco turning also several beautiful
underwater scenes.
In addition he can counts on a cast of experienced actors like Roberto
Canedo, Hector Godoy, David Silva and the extraordinary beauty of Maura
Monti. Italian born Maura moved very young with her family in South
America and then in the sixties worked as a model, TV presenter and
actress, admired for her talent and for her great beauty. After starred
in many films in the seventies she decided to retire from the scenes
and making sporadic appearances in TV series and she began a career in
journalism.
