The Green Inferno
The "Cannibal Holocaust" T-shirt that Eli Roth
wore on the set of "Hostel II" had come to our mind that the tribute to
Ruggero Deodato would go over. Over the declarations of respect and
love. Stronger than fake controversy between the two. "The Green
lnferno".
Roth who cites Herzog as inspiration takes the title from the second
segment of the legendary Italian movie that also explains the meaning.
"The Green Hell" was the flashback of the four journalists in the
Amazon and the Roth’s movie is a flash back on Italian cannibal
movies.
A tribute, a sign of esteem for a genre that had a brief but intense
moment of celebrity. "The Green lnferno" is nothing more than that.
It’s not a horror that aims to go beyond the limits and
doesn’t want to overcome the scandal of his main source of
inspiration. A modern version, we might say, of the cannibal stories
with a central criticism on the popular leaders, the guru, able to drag
the masses with intent that on paper seem pure but that hide disturbing
truths.
Once again, Roth use the “travel” as theme with a negative
attitude of the United States, always ready to put hands in other
business.
Splatter relative of Cannibal genre wants and imposes zany jokes that
Roth readily provides, but for some reason can easily imagine the
director totally excludes nudes, another essential aspect of this type
of movies.
Launch as the most frightening and terrible movie of recent years, "The
Green lnferno" has strong images well done and emphasized by some
camera movements. Roth is a capable director and above he knows well
the genre, but his movie doesn’t touch the disgust point able to
shock the audience. At least a certain audience. This product is not
only for fans (see maniacs) of genre cinema or the B movies and so "The
Green lnferno" is not always able to convey his entertainment message
to the average viewers and above all, as we said, to look a tribute to
Cannibal genre.
The narrative structure is not very easy. It follows the standards of
the genre, but the action begins after almost forty minutes. A long
wait in which we met the protagonists, aka the cannon fodder.
Justine daughter of a UN manager joins a group of activists who fight
against deforestation in the Peruvian Amazon. Ferdinando is the
handsome and charismatic leader who organized an action on the spot.
They leave for Peru and block the bulldozers. A goal achieved with
direct streaming worldwide and the group take the plane to come back
home.
The damned and fucking plane. The one that in genre films always falls,
killing somebody and leaving the survivors at the mercy of an unknown
cannibal tribe. And that's what happens here. Mistaken for enemy
survivors are caged by a group of colorful natives who ate one of them
for lunch. The more fat dies immediately and the others remain
imprisoned trying to escape and also becoming the subject of rituals
such as female circumcision. Ferdinand reveals his true purposes,
reaching paradoxical moments and between bodies slaughtered and
uncertain attempts to escape, the "developed" see the images of this
tribe and the denunciation of the Amazon deforestation.
The final credits open to a sequel planned for 2018 with Nicolás
López as director for and "Beyond the green hell"as the title.
And we hope it will be better than the "Hostel" sequel
A young and a willing cast who doesn’t’ seems ordinary
people (we quote the interview with Tarantino about "True Detective")
and that know a little about the history of genre, fulfills his duty in
a movie not memorable, but well done and which could open the revival
of the Cannibal genre.
Shot in Chile and Peru, as well as in New York, , "The Green lnferno"
should be released a year ago, but due to problems with "Worldview
Entertainment" that should manage the "P & A" the movie has been
delayed. Problems. Another thing that unites the Roth and Deodato
movies although "Cannibal Holocaust" sparked a major scandal. But at
the end "The Green Inferno" is the light version. Even in this.
