sorry for the mistakes!
A debut that
certainly stands out for the young Mexican Emiliano Rocha Minter. For
better or for worse his "We Are the Flesh" premiered at the Rotterdam
Film Festival, does not go unnoticed. Disgusting.
Well done. Cryptic.
Sharp. With
Carlos Reygadas, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu and Alfonso Cuarón, as godfathers,
Rocha Minter, create a film of which he doesn’t want to give explanations,
leaving the resolution of the many symbolisms to the viewers.
And the knots to
be solved are several, in this claustrophobic story, post-nuke, where the
director tries (and reach) the sensational hit, pushing the limits. Apart
from flaunting too much this aspect, Minter balance all with an excellent realization
thanks to a huge and long experience in the field, started very young. Aesthetically
" We Are the Flesh " is a charming film in which photography and set play
an important part, as (especially) the excellent hand of the director able to
achieve all the goals, often changing style and speed.
Freedom
of interpretation, therefore, for the audience, but it is inevitable to think
that Minter wants to underline the growing violence of society, the role of sex
and probably considering the scene of a soldier and the latest images,
criticizing Mexico's current situation. Sex,
death, incest, cannibalism, all packed in few places and delivered into the
hands of only three main characters played masterfully by Noé Hernandez, Maria Evoli
and Diego Gamaliel. The
first is a well-known name of the Mexican cinema accompanying with Gabino
Rodriguez, another famous name here in a small part that lead the two young
co-stars.
Mariano
Hernandez plays a man who lives alone in a place destroyed by something or
someone. Another world,
with other rules. One
day two boys (Maria Evoli and Diego Gamaliel) come into this place and begin
with the man a strange relationship. Hernandez
discover their deepest feelings, he teaches them sex and shows violence.
Nothing
is hidden to the viewer including explicit sex scenes, but the director is certain
that his film is "Pop" and that should be televised.
A
bit 'presumptuous Minter, but undoubtedly he has a great talent.
